Can I give my hens a bath ?

Dealing with high temperatures May 20, 2017
poultry water supply

The temperature in New York is currently 16 degrees. For most New Yorkers, this is very hot. But what is the situation in Nigeria?

In Lagos state, aat this very minute, the temperatire is 31 degrees. And in Ado Odo where Mebamu Farms is located, the temperature is double that. Well almost double.

So should Lagos, and indeed Nigerian poultry framers be bathing their chickens in cold water to cope with the heat?

Well look closely at the local hens with their brood. They are probably sitting under a tree, digging up sand and bresting under the shades of the cooler soil.

If you live in the rural areas, you might be lucky to notice a hen or two going to the local stream, lapping up the cool rush of the running waters. Battery farmers, especially Egg Laers do not have this luxury. It is down to the farmer to provide suitable alternative.

Now remember you water comes from a tank that has been warmed up by the sun's heat. Your water is not very comld. If you are pumping straint into the pen, your water sill still have a ground temperature.

Poultry farmers are well advised to spray their hens with cool water to help layers cope with the heat.

Experiment Place some water into a big but shallow bath. Place the bath under a tree. See if the hens in your farm will step into the water. Post your comment by twetting us @MebamuF
