Goats feeding on grass at Mebamu Goat Farm

Goats are predominantly browsing herbivoress. That means goats will eat grass at a higher level compared to cattle that actually graze much lower.

Goats can live on just grass. A more ballanced diet, howervver, will need about 8 to 10% grain for best growth and milk production.

Goat fodder can be grown from seeds in less than a week, and since the grains are still in a semi fermented state, the sugars from fresh fodder is richer than just grass.

Goats also eat tree leaves, and becasue of their curous nature, will eat almost anything. Care must be taken therefore to remove any item hazardous to goats' health from their browsing pasture.

Some goat farmers have claimed they use one acre to raise/farm 90 to 100 goats.

Goat Housing

Thinking of the typical funali herdsmen goats do not need housing, if kept for their meat, or skin.

The goat farmer wanting to produce milk will need a barn and at least three groups of nannies to have a steady supply of lactating goats.
